star silk

by helen amy murray for the rug company

Helen Amy Murray is an artist and designer recognised for her delicate and complex hand-crafted pieces, experimenting with sculpting techniques and luxurious materials.

Since founding her eponymous brand in 2002, Murray has honed her unique aesthetic and translated it into various forms, including installation artworks, furniture, superyachts, and private residences.

Having first collaborated with The Rug Company in 2009, Murray’s natural geometric motifs and discernible eye for detail ensure that each design has a timeless appeal”

Helen Amy Murray is recognised for her hand-crafted creations that take inspiration from nature and form to create surface relief within textiles. Helen had previously applied the techniques to leather and suede, but the Rug Company collaboration successfully translated Helen’s abstract designs into innovative, hand-carved, hand-knotted rugs. The results are truly ground-breaking, and Helen’s Peony rug was awarded the Homes & Gardens award 2008 and the BIDA Award at Decorex Fair in the same year.

Even with my most complex patterns, my designs always link back to the natural world; I think that’s why people respond to my work on such an emotional level.” Helen Amy Murray.

Star Silk is handknotted from silk, and the motif is hand-carved into the surface.

Helen says: “I use this star pattern carved into metallic leathers, but the silk used for the rug enhances it. I call it Star, but you could see diamonds or little boxes too.”
